Automated Traffic Scenario Simulator

The ATSS simulates real-world situations for driver training scenarios. Using a series of red and green lights the ATSS simulates oncoming cars, cross-traffic, or stopped traffic, providing added realism to department training. Because it is automated the ATSS frees an instructor from the tedious duty of actuating signaling equipment or standing in a dangerous location waving flags. This system eliminates the use of unrealistic audible commands and instead creates visual cues to direct students to make emergency lane changes. Drivers are presented with a random pattern of lights forcing a swerve into one or more lanes.

Adaptive Reaction Time™ allows for consistent reaction times regardless of the student’s vehicle speed. Unlike fixed activation point systems the ATSS uses the student’s speed to determine when to change the lights to achieve the configured reaction time. This prevents the student from gaining more reaction time by slowing down or losing reaction time by going faster than the exercise’s target speed.

Traditionally light systems of this kind have required a dedicated facility with expensive, permanently mounted lights and an instructor to operate them manually. The ATSS is completely portable and can be set up in dedicated facilities as well as temporary training venues. Semi-permanent versions with light weight, easy to assemble scaffolding are also available. The ATSS can greatly expand your department’s training flexibility and offer smaller departments training opportunities without the need for dedicated facilities. Any school, church, mall, or office parking lot can now become a training facility for your department.

Additionally systems utilizing lights suitable for daytime use are often powered by expensive, noisy generators to provide AC power.  Portable systems often rely on battery powered lights that are difficult to see in bright sunlight.  Blacktop Bootcamp's ATSS utilizes high-visibility LED lights that are visible from over 700-feet away in broad daylight.  Battery power ensures clean, quiet, reliable operation that can be charged from the included AC/DC charger, solar panels, or any available 12-volt power source.

Designed by law enforcement for law enforcement, the ATSS is easy to set up, test and operate. All connectors are designed to interface with the appropriate ports to ensure the system is properly assembled every time,  regardless of who sets it up. Simple, menu driven configuration ensures easy setup with consistent, repeatable, bias-free, and randomized scenarios.

 

How it works

Prior to the introduction of Blacktop Bootcamp's Automated Traffic Scenario Simulator (ATSS), instructors wishing to teach emergency lane change maneuvers had to rely on flags, audible commands, or manually actuated light systems.  Light based systems usually utilized some form of triggering that was actuated by an instructor when the vehicle approached a specific point, or by the student vehicle activating some kind of sensor.  These systems had only a rudimentary ability to provide a stimulus to the student at a certain reaction time.

Emergency Braking Mode

When the ATSS detects an oncoming vehicle, it turns all lights green.  Emergency Braking Mode uses the instructor's preset reaction time to turn the lights from green to red. This forces the student to perform a panic stop.  This can help teach students the characteristics of Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) and the effects of speed on the ability to stop.

Intersection Clearing Mode

One of the most unique aspects of the ATSS is its ability to provide training tailored specifically to the emergency response market.  Running code to a call is one of the greatest dangers of any first responder job.  Emergency vehicles may be able to legally go through red lights and stop signs during a priority call; however, it does not relieve them of the duty to operate with due regard for public safety nor does it make them immune to the laws of physics.

The ATSS is specifically designed to enable instructors to teach students how to properly clear an intersection.  Reconfiguring the lights from a linear pattern as with the Emergency Braking and Emergency Lane Change Modes, to an individual pattern the ATSS can be used to signal each leg of a 4-way intersection.  Each light then represents oncoming traffic from that leg of the intersection.  When the student approaches the intersection one or more of the lights will change from green to red.  Each individual red light will stay in that state for individually random periods of time before changing back to green.  This simulates the differing reaction and stopping times of oncoming traffic.

Lane Change Mode

The main feature of the ATSS is Lane Change Mode.  Utilizing our patented Adaptive Reaction Time™ the ATSS standardizes training for your organization.  The instructor sets the desired reaction time and then the ATSS' Adaptive Reaction Time(tm) feature ensures that all students are presented with the same reaction time regardless of their speed.  This produces a true panic reaction as there are no fixed points, vocal or visual clues to give the student a hint about when the lane change is going to happen or what lane they need to head for.
